Varsity Jacket
Ever found yourself watching The Breakfast Club and pining after high-school jock Andrew Clark’s glorious paneled jacket? Yep, us too. If that’s the case, chances are that you’re already a varsity jacket lover and to that, we say, great taste. Also known as a “letterman” jacket, the varsity style dates as far back as the 1930s and has long been synonymous with American jock culture. Worn as a uniform, the patches-emblazoned jacket traditionally symbolized the initials of the school or establishment an athlete represented. In fact, the style was first worn when the Harvard University baseball team of 1865 opted for cashmere sweaters marked by a loud and proud “H” in chenille. It was here that varsity style – and eventually the wool-bodied, leather-sleeved varsity jacket – was born. Now donned by everyone from the Beckham boys to Tyler, The Creator and Drake, the preppy piece has taken on a number of different aesthetics, recently sent down the runway by the late Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton, with oversized takes by Y/Project and simple beige looks from Isabel Marrant also turning the heads of fashion crowds.
